Good Products for Roses
The Milwaukee Rose Society has a couple of fund raisers and the most successful is the sale of the two products listed below that are used by many of our society members as well as other gardeners in this area who have heard about them.  For the first time, we are offering these for sale to the general public.

All inquiries must be directed to Larry Heebsh who is taking orders for this year's Rose Sale as well as this particular sale.  He will provide the information you need.
Woody's Organic Fertilizer

The famous “Woody’s Mix” is for sale by the Milwaukee Rose Society. The fertilizer is packaged into 25-lb bags and sell for $10.  Its composition is two parts of alfalfa, and one part of blood meal, soybean, Milorganite, and fish meal.

An important thing to remember when using this or other fertilizers:  Do not put any of this Woody’s Mix organic fertilizer into the bottom of the hole in which you are planting your rose.  The only fertilizer that you should be putting into the bottom of the hole is 1/4 cup of triple-or superphosphate (for a large rose) and for a mini, just one tablespoon.  Cover with about an inch of soil and then plant your rose.

The following directions are best used on your established rose plants. Woody’s Mix is an excellent fertilizer for your roses and should be applied at a rate of 1 to 2 cups per bush depending on the size of the plant.  The first application should begin after you finish pruning.  As the soil warms, the fertilizer will start to break down and supply a slow-release nutritional diet good for the plants and also provides food for the soil’s micro-organisms.  It is at this time you will also want to scratch in about ½ cup of Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) and triple- or superphosphate (0-20-0).  The Woody’s Mix can be applied every four to six weeks during the growing season until mid August.  At that point, withhold fertilizer as you want the plant to “harden off” for winter.

After comparing our “Woody’s Mix” with other organic rose fertilizers containing similar components, “Woody’s Mix” is a definite bargain at just $10 per 25-lb bag.  Depending on how many roses you grow in your garden, plan to order several bags to keep on hand.

Just a word about the cocoa bean mulch --

It is prudent and wise that if you are the owner of a dog who might possibly have an appetite for cocoa shells, we advise you to thoroughly water the mulch after spreading it in your garden.  A couple of waterings and the "harmful" residue should dissipate.  We would certainly not want any dog to eat the cocoa bean mulch.  In our rose society are many dog owners and none of them who buy the mulch have ever experienced any adverse reaction with their pets.  (In fact, I have personal knowledge of a pet store owner who uses cocoa bean mulch and has a dog and her next door neighbor also has a dog who eats anything.  Neither animal was not one bit interested in the tasting the mulch.)
